Last week, we gave you a heads up on all the events going on around town in celebration of “Pump Me Up: DC Subculture of the 1980s” – a new exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. On Friday, FamousDC was one of 1,100 cool kids at the preview party, where we got to hang with exhibit curator and graffiti historian Roger Gastman; Black Flag front man and Georgetown native Henry Rollins; and DC’s punk rock figurehead Ian MacKaye. Considering these guys used to represent the antithesis of the Corcoran’s standard coterie, my guess is they never expected to see an exhibit dedicated to their visual, aural and DIY ethos, let alone for that exhibit to be packed to the gills.

It’s the end of February and spring is just around the corner so we decided to take a few minutess to look back at this hectic, shortened month by going through our amazing FamousDC Flickr Group. As always the photos in this group amaze and remind us of how diverse and unique DC really is. Go check it out, and feel free to submit your own images of the District.

Feasting Famously with Necessary & Proper Fashion-Forward Founders Lauren & Van Dish about Cooking, Hosting, and Entertaining As I’m walking to PJ Clarke’s Sidecar to meet the founders of the popular DC-based fashion blog Necessary & Proper, Lauren and Van, I find myself oddly nervous. Am I dressed appropriately (that’s silly, of course), will they be nice, down-to-earth, absurdly well dressed, and easy to talk to? The answer to all of the above, as I soon found out, is a resounding “yes.” Launched in January 2012 as a site to showcase their personal fashion sense, trending styles, local brands and entertaining concepts, Necessary & Proper soon became a top blog for social-style in the District. Not taking themselves too seriously, Lauren & Van show the masses how to combine patterns, colors, and textured fabrics into cohesive outfits. Haven’t we all struggled with what is the proper attire when walking through the park in the snow? Or what to wear when playing in a pile of leaves? Is my Smith Point outfit acceptable to wear again to Martin’s Tavern brunch (the answer is no)? These are some of the fun and admitting outlandish, photo-shoots (sans the last one) that Lauren and Van use to showcase their fashionable combinations.

Exhibit Openings, Social Media Week and the Oscars; It’s gonna be a packed weekend so take a minute to get ready, set and go!

The intersection of 7th Street, Florida Avenue, and U Street Northwest perpetually echoes the “boom-tap, a-boom-boom tap” sound made famous by the late Godfather of go-go, Chuck Brown. Minor Threat front man and D.C. native Ian MacKaye can still be heard playing all ages shows throughout the city, making tickets available exclusively at local record shops. And, if you get creative, you can scour the side streets of D.C. and find some of the rare remaining tags of the elusive Cool “Disco” Dan. D.C. underground will be sanctified this weekend in a 3-day lambast of cool marking the opening of “Pump Me Up: D.C. Subculture of the 1980’s” and the world premiere of the film “The Legend of Cool “Disco” Dan”.

Yoga, cupcakes, fashion, and the interminable DC job search were brought together Tuesday evening during The Internet Association’s (IA) Dupont Circle Small Business Crawl highlighting the profound impact of the internet on jobs, economic growth, and innovation on Main Street. The Internet Association represents the interests of some of the leading internet companies in the world, including Google, Airbnb, Amazon.com, eBay, LinkedIn, Yahoo!, and Facebook. In the spirit of DC Social Media Week, IA facilitated a walking tour through some of the most successful independent businesses in Dupont circle. The event was attended by several local leaders including representatives from the Mayor’s office, the DC Chamber and the small business community.

Meet Ericka Andersen. Ericka handles all of the social media for The Heritage Foundation, but when she is not in the office she is managing her fitness blog, The Sweet Life. A visit to her blog provides followers with information on running and living a healthy lifestyle, but Ericka also likes to incorporate exciting moments from her life outside of the fitness realm. FamousDC got a chance to learn more about Ericka’s blogging success.

New members, new staff – it’s that time of year when the hill sees a lot of turn over and a bunch of fresh faces crop up among the seasoned veterans. Having been in your shoes and made several of these mistakes, FamousDC thought we’d share a few choice pieces …

Congratulations to the newly engaged couple Brad Dayspring and Lauren Pratapas. Dayspring recently began work as a strategist at the NRSC and Pratapas joined the team at Story Partners last spring. Right after he popped the question this past weekend.  

Congrats to Eric Wilson on the new gig as Digital Director at American Action Network. Today is Wilson’s last day Engage and we wish him all the best. P.S. We’ll also be sure to send along a few FDC stickers for the AAN office.

1. You are on the front lines. The first voice people hear when they call the office and the front person there when they walk in. 2. Because you make so much coffee, you’re eligible to opt out of the Starbucks barista test if you decide to change careers. 3. Everyone is forced to know your name or else they don’t get the good office supplies. 4. Nobody uses fax machines anymore.

3 day weekend, 3 nights of fun. What could be better? Time to kick off tonight with new a happy hour spot and end with the extra day for recovery on Monday.
