Friday Round Up
#Weekend
Awesome events: Whether for Father’s Day or just because it’ll be awesome — don’t miss (bottomless) Brunch on the Baselines at Nats Park this Sunday; Truckeroo is back tonight at The Bullpen; Everything gets better with the Grateful Dead so head to Gypsy Sally’s on Saturday night for a boost in your quality of life; Don’t miss this year’s Mississippi on the Mall tomorrow at Henry Bacon Ball Field! Get your tickets here; The ‘Summer of Yoko Ono’ is coming to the Hirshhorn Museum beginning Saturday; Nikki Glaser is in town to make you ROFL all weekend at DC Improv; If you don’t like comic books, there’s always people watching at Awesome Con on Saturday; Maybe a Running Music Festival Saturday night will help you forget that you’re actually running – although we doubt it; Sunday is a good day to sing along to your favorite classics from The Sound of Music at the Kennedy Center; DC Jazz Festival makes for a nice little Sunday afternoon.
From Eli: After this first painfully hot week of summer, I’m down about the possible rain tomorrow, but there’s a chance for some sunshine on Sunday. That’s before this controversial Megyn Kelly interview with Alex Jones. In the meantime, I’ve been craving some oysters for a while now and have thought about checking out the Salt Line, which just opened up on the waterfront. Otherwise, I’m headed to a classic, Martin’s Tavern, this weekend in Georgetown with the two best bartenders in the city, Rob and Alejandro.
#ORIGINALSERIES
We wanted to know what it was like to be an intern, but not so much that we wanted to find out ourselves. Our intern Josh did the work for us in episode 6 of FamousDC’s non-Netflix original series: Life of An Intern. Miss a few episodes? Binge here.
#LOCAL
Ever wondered what U.S. Capitol Police do?; Congress came together on Capitol Hill; A dog that ran away during Wednesday’s shooting has been found; Here’s a guide to eating and drinking your way through Georgetown; More millennials are coming to DC. Yay; No, the Reflecting Pool isn’t missing water because of climate change; This politics-free newsletter is the best girls’ night in you’ll ever have; These pictures of Watergate will either remind you that you’re either really young or really old; A wawawarm welcome to DC!
From Eli: D.C. was hot last weekend, and you could nearly cut the air with a butter knife this week (we felt it at Nat’s Park on Tuesday). It turns out that May was the second-hottest month in 137 years – following last May. Speaking of Nat’s Park, Ivanka Trump showed up Thursday night at the Congressional Baseball Game, a charity event that raised $1 million – nearly double what it raised last year. If you want to smile, check out this Washington Post bit on Symba, a 35 pound cat being cared for at the Humane Rescue Alliance (when it loses weight, we’re calling it Slimba).
#NATIONAL
Baseball means bipartisan friendships; We can’t stop watching this trailer for Netflix’s new comedy, Friends From College; How The Handmaid’s Tale changed the game for Hulu; Hillary Clinton’s campaign Twitter is back and it’s trolling Trump; Can someone tell us what’s up with Katy Perry?
From Eli: Spending a lot of time on Capitol Hill, it is easy to get cynical about Congress and politics. But this week, House Speaker Paul Ryan’s remarks on the House floor – followed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s – gave us chills while sitting in the House gallery. All this made me curious about some more trivial news, such as the First Lady’s Instagram account. I think that crumb on Thursday might be the new black dress/gold dress. And a shameless plug: At Morning Consult, we released a list of America’s most admired employers (it turns out Republicans love John Deere as much as Democrats love Tesla).
#EDITORSPICK
From patching up our scraped knees to picking us up when we’re down, we want to say “Thanks, Dad!” for everything you’ve done for us and everything you let us do that mom didn’t. (Don’t worry, we still won’t tell)
#SOCIALSEEN
There are a few things more annoying than the Metro
We came. We Lunched. We learned.
The devil is in the details – and in your nightmares.
Out of 6 In-N-Out milkshakes, only 2 survived.
Thank you to our #LunchAndLyons panelists that crushed conversation on Capitol Hill last week!
When’s the next James Comey bar crawl?
Not all fudge is good for you.
