America lost a legend last week with the passing of Merle Haggard. Beginning in the early 1960s, Merle pioneered an edgier form of country music than the safe sounds emanating out of Nashville. He and his bandmates brought outlaw country straight out of Texas and into the ears of Americans nationwide. Bands ranging from the Grateful Dead to mainstream country megastars credit him as a major influence.
