Famous readers – it’s time again for some weekend revelry! Whatever you do this weekend, make sure you get out and see the Cherry Blossoms before they go. Otherwise, hope you find some joy in my picks for weekend fun in the DofC! Enjoy.
Thursday
MarchMadness – the thrill of all things mad in the b-ball world continues tonight through the weekend. Check out my recommendations for fun places to watch your favorite team from last weekend’s Famous Weekend Picks post!
Blackbyrd – I almost hate to give this chill spot away but if you’re out on U Street tonight, be sure to stop by between 9-11pm for my buddy Shaun Sharkey’s old funk/soul DJ set. He’s tons of fun.
Friday
Friday happy hour – it’s been a long week and you’re craving oysters and beer. Random? Nah, I say brilliance and both will be featured during American Eats Tavern’s $1 oyster happy hour from 4-7pm. HH also includes $4 draft beers, $6 wines, an $8 punch, and Flying Dog beers. #winner
Red Fridays – don’t miss DC DJ legend, Sam “the Man” Burns at U Street Music Hall. Free entrance before 11pm; $5 afterwards.
Fatboy Slim – if you’re an oldie in the electronic world as I am, you will recall this DJ’s late 1990’s heyday and will want to hit the 9:30 Club to see what he’s up to these days. Stop by American Ice Company for pre-game libations on bar’s chill outdoor patio.
Saturday
Shamrock Festival – you may already know that the National ShamrockFest is the largest Saint Paddy’s festival in the Mid-Atlantic Region. If you’ve never been, head down to RFK Stadium for a full day of food, drinks, more than 50 live Bands and DJ’s on 10 stages and endless party zones. $25 tickets unless you want to get extra swanky with the $90 VIP tix.
Katie Herzog – a friend reminded me of this Grammy-nominated indie artist and upon realizing I had a few of her songs on my ipod (me=#musicfanatic), I was thrilled to learn she will be performing at the Red Palace. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $12. Check her out!
Sunday
Mixing like Mad Men – from 2-6pm at Quill, catch bartenders from Bibiana, Café Milano, America Eats Tavern and others, whipping up some hot cocktails at this cocktail competition. For $40, this is the perfect prelude to the Mad Men premiere later in the evening.
Bourbon Steak – if you want a swankier Mad Men experience, head to this Four Seasons restaurant for Bourbon’s swanky soiree which features a cocktail reception with classic ’60s drinks, a three-course meal with retro dishes like Beef Wellington, and an episode viewing in the Four Seasons’ private dining room. Prizes will be awarded for the best ’60s fashions. A $75 ticket includes food and drinks.
Lounge 201 – if you prefer a more low-key evening, head to this Capitol Hill bar for their Mad Men viewing party which features ’60s costume and trivia contests, retro cocktails, and a swag bag. General admission is $10, but two open-bar packages are available: get unlimited rail drinks from 7 to 9 p.m. for $20, or upgrade to name brands for $30.
Monday
Blue Banana Sports Bar – who said Mondays have to be dull? Blue Banana isn’t one of them and to prove it, they’ll be offering $4 drinks/beers all night. For more fun, head back to Blue Banana on Thursday for the same deal.
Tiesto – arguably the biggest DJ in the world, Tiesto will be spinning at the intimate club Josephine at 9pm. Advance tickets are beyond sold out, but there will be 50 to 100 tickets available at the door Monday night on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 9 p.m.; Tiesto will be on at midnight.
