Living in DC has its perks. We play host to celebrities visiting Capitol Hill and we celebrate with our international friends during their country’s celebrations throughout the year. This week, for example, marks the Beaujolais Nouveau celebration in which France honors the unveiling of the wine at midnight on the third Thursday of every November. Here are five notable events taking place this week that recognizes several celebrities and highlights the French Beaujolais Nouveau celebration.
Today, Glenn Close, Tipper Gore and Cokie Roberts are in town for The Mental Health HOPE Symposium: Lost Dollars, Lost People, Lost HOPE that aims to bring together congressional leaders and staff, senior leadership, and public policy experts to discuss the current status of mental health care in America.
Also today, more than 42 years after they took the Apollo 11 to the moon, Neil Amstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. and Michael Collins will be honored for their achievement with a Congressional Gold Medal. John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, will also be honored for his achievements.
November 16th: Beaujolais Nouveau Party – in my opinion, the best-known soiree in DC for Beaujolais Nouveau is at Bistrot du Coin where tables are cleared after dinner to make room for a DJ and dance floor. There is no cover charge, and lines outside begin to form early: If you don’t have dinner reservations, you should arrive before 10 p.m.
November 17th: Beaujolais and Beyond – if you prefer a more classy Beaujolais Nouveau celebration, head to the French Embassy where the French-American Chamber of Commerce hosts its Beaujolais and Beyond celebration. The $50 ticket includes all the Beaujolais Nouveau you can drink, plus wines from Bordeaux to Alsace, hors d’oeuvres, pastries, live jazz and dancing to a DJ.
November 18th: Festively Elegant: A Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration – the Alliance Francaise will host their party at the swank Washington Club on Dupont Circle. Tickets include unlimited Beaujolais Nouveau, other red and white French wines, beer, a dinner buffet from a local French restaurant, live jazz, a DJ, a fashion show and a silent auction.
