Meet Mark Knoller. The most interesting man in the world.

Mark Knoller is an award-winning White House Correspondent for CBS News. He reports for CBS Radio News, as well as The Saturday Early Show. He also contributes to the weekend editions of the CBS Evening News and Up To The Minute (h/t CBS).

Mr. Knoller was nice enough to answer a few questions for us for one of our Famous 5 interviews.

1. Your day job involves tracking the most powerful man in the world. What was your most interesting day at work?

It’s difficult to pick out one day from the scores of historic events I’ve gotten to cover at the White House since 1976.

Theres was the Begin-Sadat peace treaty signing with Pres. Carter; the Rabin-Arafat handshake with Pres Clinton; and the Clinton impeachment and subsequent acquittal.

I was with Pres. Bush in Sarasota the morning of the 9/11 attacks; and at the White House the evening of March 19, 2003 when he addressed the nation at 10:15PM to announce the start of the war in Iraq.

I got to be at Panama Canal Treaty signing with Pres. Carter, the Korean DMZ with Pres. Reagan; in Houston the night Pres. Bush lost his bid for a 2nd term; at Babi Yar in Ukraine with Pres. Clinton and more than a year cumulatively in Waco/Crawford with Pres Bush.

One of the longest & most harrowing days was March 30, 1981 – the day Pres. Reagan was shot. I was in the White House Briefing Room for Secy. Haig’s “I’m in charge” statement. I was sent to Andrews AFB to await return to DC of VP Bush, then to U.S. District Count till three in the morning for John Hinckley’s first appearance in court.

2. You get a free weekend without work to hang out in DC, what do you do?

Sleep late. Run errands. Do laundry. See an occasional movie. Have a leisurely lunch. Keep an eye on the news to update my Twitter site.

3. How many miles have you logged on Air Force One and do you have a particular trip that was the most memorable?

I don’t keep track of my trips on Air Force One, only the President’s. During 8 years in office, Pres. Bush(43) flew 1,675 flights on Air Force One. At this writing, Pres. Obama has flown 335 times on Air Force One and 394 on Marine One.

4. Who do you think is the funniest political reporter / politician and why?

The wisecracks and jokes fly at warp speed around every press room I’ve known. Modesty forbids me from singling out the funniest member of the press.

5. Does Joe Biden really drive an old Camaro to the White House?

News to me. I’ve seen his motorcade arrive at the White House. Big, black, burly SUVs laden with heavily armed agents, limousines that could plow through a minefield and staff vans. Never seen a Camaro.
