If you don’t know Michael Clements (shame), then you’re about to find out – and not just because he gave us the scoop on his life and access to his (pretty sweet) Instagram, but because his name is about to infiltrate your life and what should be one of your priorities: Avoiding FOMO. Michael is the newest Editor in Chief at Capitol File Magazine and we’ve got at least 5 reasons why you should care.
You’ve traveled to quite a few places. Which has been your favorite and why?
MC: Hong Kong. I loved living and working there and have a lot of respect for its history and people. It’s such a dynamic and international urban center with an infectious energy and food, nightlife and hiking. Plus, now I can ask for the “real menu” in Cantonese at Dim Sum restaurants in Maryland.
As an artrepreneur, what kind of art or creative works have inspired you most?
MC: I’m moved by art that inspires and challenges. Basquiat and Khalo are my favorites. Locally I’m a fan of No Kings Collective, Maggie O’Neil, Violetta Markelou, MasPaz, Martin Swift and Kelly Towles. I’m also continually surprised by the talent of all the artists we have on our ArtJamz team.
Where can we find you on a day off?
MC: Day off? During downtime, I love date nights with my awesome partner Anchyi Wei as well as working in the garden with our son, who starts DCPS this fall.
Which of your Instagram posts best describes you?
MC: Probably this picture I took shark diving off Cape Eleuthera, Bahamas last December. You can’t grow and learn unless you conquer your fears. Sharks are beautiful, amazing and misunderstood creatures.
What can Capitol File fans look forward to with a new Editor in Chief? (Congrats!)
MC: (Thanks!) With my first issue I’m hoping readers can look forward to getting their books on time – I’m sort of working on an “abbreviated” production schedule. Welcome back to publishing, right? In the long term, our region can expect an EIC that thinks out of the box. That’s not afraid to take risks. That respects our region’s diverse and rich history. That wants to define what Pollywood means.
BONUS: Your turn! Ask yourself a questions and answer it.
What’s your favorite movie or TV show about magazines?
MC: Hmmm. Good question. In full disclosure, I binge watched The Bold Type in preparation for being a Gen X EIC in a Millennial world.
