THURSDAY JAM
Brought to you by Tazwell Jones of Bryant Row.
Today, we can hear hip-hop wherever we go, from popular rappers to pop music in general. But in 1998, two MC’s from New York City – Mos Def and Talib Kwali – were rapping for reasons other than popular appeal, though they did succeed at that too. As Black Star, the duo of soon-to-be-legendary rappers rhymed about the dangers of real life in bad neighborhoods in big cities, about inauthentic representations of their music form and about keeping hip-hop true to its purpose of uniting marginalized communities through music. Here’s “Definition” by Black Star for our ThrowbackThursday jam.
