Kentucky Society of Washington: Derby Talk
The Kentucky Society of Washington is on their marks and getting set for their 35th Annual Pre-Kentucky Derby Party this Sunday May 1st at River Farm.
The Pre-Derby Party is annually held the weekend before the Kentucky Derby to celebrate the race and the beloved traditions of the south. Guests will indulge in a bourbon bar sponsored by Maker’s Mark (with mint juleps, of course!), Kentucky Fried Chicken and biscuits, country ham, beer cheese, derby pie, bourbon balls and live bluegrass music.
The dress code is, of course, derby-chic, with colorful sun dresses, big hats, elegant fascinators, seersucker and bow ties. Guests will vote on the best hat throughout the event and at the end of the afternoon, the winner will receive a bag full of Kentucky-themed prizes. A silent auction full of fun items will also be available for guests, with all proceeds going toward the Kentucky Society (items include a wine class for 20 valued at $500).
The event’s location, River Farm, consists of 25 landscaped acres overlooking the Potomac River. The party will be held both in the house and gardens, and guests are welcome to bring picnic blankets to lounge on the hill leading to the river.
