Coach Taylor and President Obama are Basically the Same Person
Coach Taylor– the fictional character from award winning show, Friday Night Lights soared to stardom when he stole America’s heart as the beloved father-figure and inspirational football coach on the Texas based drama. Many will tell you- he’s not terrible to look at either. The show faces many issues around contemporary American culture such as racism, economic inequality, family values, religious beliefs, and the like. Issues that also make an appearance in an annual address made by the President each January.
Whether it was intentional or not, we’re thinking President Obama’s speechwriter, Cody Keenan made a pretty savvy move when he essentially worked in a line from Coach Taylor’s playbook to the President’s last State of the Union Address last night. Nearing the end of the president’s 58 minute long speech, just as people were beginning to tire and RBG was well into her second REM cycle, Obama dropped a line that caught the nation’s attention.
“That’s the America I know. That’s the country we love. Clear-eyed. Big-hearted. Optimistic that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”
Pump the brakes. Did he just pull a Coach Taylor and reference the legendary pre-game motivational line, “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.”? The jury says, why yes- yes he did.
And with that- the Twitter machine went WILD.
“Clear eyes, hull hearts, can’t lose” -Obama (well basically) #SOTU16

Once we started thinking about it, we realized that America’s beloved fictional football coach and the leader of the free world may have more in common than we realized. In fact- they’re basically the same person.
- Every SOTU is basically just a lengthier Coach Taylor pep talk
- They both encourage themes of courage, persistence, and respect
- They are both firm but fair
- They have plenty of adversaries
- They encourage a sense of respect for the other team
- They’re both family men
- They both have two daughters
- They both have seriously bad ass spouses
- They both look great in blue
- Obama says politics is most like the sport of football
“[There’s] A lot of players, a lot of specialization, a lot of hitting, a lot of attrition. But then every once in a while you’ll see an opening. You’re hitting the line; you get one yard, you try a play, you get sacked, now it’s third and 15 but every once in a while, (you have to punt a lot)… but every once in a while you’ll see a hole, and then there’s open field.”
If you have any further doubts that President Obama actually IS IN FACT Coach Taylor. Just see the photos below.
