Today we fired up the time machine to bring you a taste of 1957 in 2013. Clement’s Bakery is on a block of G Street NW and sits vacant alongside equally empty neighbors: Graphix Tattoos and some “Italian Kitchen.” Clement’s Pastry Shop was started in 1928, in a different location, by Chef Clement Maggia and his brother. Clement’s actual, live business is bustling in Hyattsville, MD, but this shell of its old DC storefront on asks more questions than it answers. A reminder of years past, what has this building seen in its time standing? The year Clement’s moved into the neighborhood (1957), Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded “That’ll Be the Day,” Mickey Mantle hit his 200th home run and Althea Gibson won Wimbledon.  As for the bakery that year, Clement’s put their energy into transitioning from local orders to commercial ones (catering embassies and museums). Their customers included Presidents Eisenhower and Truman and Linda Byrd Johnson, daughter of LBJ. For now, the building’s 1950s-era aquamarine awning and windows stand out brightly from the taupe stone architecture surrounding the old Clement’s Bakery. Some day, it’s supposed to be built out as a museum, but until then, it’s part of a trio of vacant storefronts that are frozen in time.
