Dumpstaphunk – the name alone incites curiosity. So, when I saw them on the bill at my latest favorite venue in DC – The Hamilton – I knew I had to be there last Saturday night to get a glimpse of what I had been told is the funkiest band around.
Led by the uber-talented and effervescent Ivan Neville – one of the well-known Neville brothers who are considered New Orleans royalty by anyone from there – Dumpsta has a following of people seeking real phunk music. The funky five that make up Dumpsta all hold impressive credentials with resumes that boast playing with some of the biggest names in the music business. Ivan has played with Bonnie Raitt and the Rolling Stones, while the other members – bassists Tony Hall and Nick Daniels, drummer Raymond Weber, and guitarist Ian Neville – have played with Trey Anastasio and Dave Matthews. Easily, their sound can be described as spicy-hot Louisiana funk – the kind of music that makes you want to get down and dirty.
Formed in 2003, Dumpsta is currently on a tour that will take them out west before returning to the east coast to make their way back to New Orleans for Jazz Fest 2012. Having had the opportunity to party with them post-show, I can say without a doubt that you do not want to miss them!
