The National Zoo released a list today of the animals’ reactions, or lack thereof in the case of the pandas, to yesterday’s earthquake. Some highlights from nature’s finest:
The howler monkeys sounded an alarm call just after the earthquake. (Glad they let us know after the fact)
The black and rufous giant elephant-shrew hid in his habitat and refused to come out for afternoon feeding. (It’s a big deal if you skip lunch)
The lion pride was outside. They all stood still and faced the building, which rattled during the quake. All settled down within minutes. (Someone had to maintain dignity)
According to keepers, the giant pandas did not appear to respond to the earthquake. (Do they ever move?)
