I’m from Brooklyn. I know, I’m sorry. But my collaborator and boyfriend Steven Weinberg hails from DC! And we’re returning to his old stomping grounds this Friday, 7:30 pm for a talk and signing at Politics & Prose for our book To Timbuktu: Nine Countries, Two People, One True Story.
It’s the story of the two years right out of college that we spent living in Asia and West Africa making it, yes, all the way to Timbuktu. I wrote it, Steven illustrated it and essentially it’s like a picture book but much longer and filled with much more booze and other ‘adult situations’ than say, Goodnight Moon.
The other book people love to compare it to when they first hear about it is Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Don’t cringe! Don’t click away! Now is the part when I tell you that it’s actually COMPLETELY different from Eat Pray Love. Namely I’m not a 30-something divorcée in the middle of a serious life crisis played by Julia Roberts in the movie and our book has WAY more pictures.
A few months ago, we were compelled to watch the movie and turn it into a drinking game. With costumes. And photo documentation. We recommend you check out that post here and then come to our book talk this Friday 7:30pm and ask us embarrassing questions about it in front of the teen readers and Steven’s mom. See you there!
