The Committee on House Administration sent the following notice to House offices last month:
Summer Interns?
Educate Staff on IT Security and Stay Alert to Insider Threats!
From: The Committee on House Administration
Date: 5/16/2011
May 16, 2011
Dear Colleague:
As summer intern season nears, the Committee on House Administration would like to remind Member offices about some important IT security measures they should take to protect official information. New and temporary employees unfamiliar with the House IT security policies and best practices can greatly increase the risk that your information could be compromised.
Therefore, the committee strongly urges offices to keep their information secure by following these five steps:
1. Require all interns and new employees to complete the online IT training seminar.
2. Have your interns sign a Principles of Behavior form. The standard House form is located here on Housenet.
3. Restrict access to your sensitive office files and folders. At a minimum, in addition to your general share drive, create a sensitive area or share with controlled access.
4. Provide each Intern with a unique network account. This means each intern should log into the House network with a separate account and a password they create. Remind them to keep their password secret and never share it.
5. Review this .pdf file and read more about Insider Threat.
For more information regarding the steps that your office should take to protect your information, please contact your Technical Support Representative for assistance at 5-6002 or 1-800-HIR-USER.
Sincerely,
Daniel E. Lungren
