Weekend Picks: Recess

Head over to the Black Cat for a night of indie-cool with this group that showcases underground DC rock at its best. $8; doors at 8pm.

There are only a few remaining Fridays to enjoy jazz, wine and nibbles in the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden. Why not make tonight one of them? Go early to reserve a spot and check out the Dave Wright jazz ensemble. Free, though sangria and other food/drink items incur a fee.

This band that hails mainly from Rockville, MD will be performing at Merriweather Post Pavillion. Having been to see them in recent years, I can attest to how loyal their local fans are. Head down early for some tailgating. Tickets are $35-45; doors at 5:30pm.

I love a good fair, especially with some friend’s kids in tow. Take your whole family or loved one and spend the day perusing the exhibitions. The Fair lasts all weekend so there is plenty of merriment to be had.

Musical acts like Nouveau Riche, Tittsworth and DJ Underdog will be on hand as will other artists, vendors and DJs for a 12-hour music lineup that will certainly leave you wanting more. This new Washington music festival was created to highlight all of this, with musical acts, artists, vendors and DJs.

For $12 you can experience what AC/DC would be like for real – well, outside of a stadium of course. Take your honey to the State Theatre and dance the night away. You!…shook me all night long…you get the drift. Doors at 8pm.

Kick off DC Beer Week at Maple while sampling six Italian craft beers and antipasti, all for $40. 2:30pm.

Throughout their musical career, including when Bob Marley was a part of the band, The Wailers have sold over 250 million records worldwide. Head down to the State Theatre to get a glimpse of what makes them such a joy to see. $22 tickets; doors at 6pm.

The time as come to say goodbye to the Olympics until Rio de Janeiro takes over in 2016. Be sure to catch the closing ceremonies, “A Symphony of British Music”, to celebrate music as one of Britain’s strongest cultural exports over the last 50 years. 9pm
