Who was the most liberal Senator in 2007?

January 31, 2008

Drum roll, please…

None other than Presidential hopeful, Barack Obama…

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was the most liberal senator in 2007, according to National Journal’s 27th annual vote ratings. The insurgent presidential candidate shifted further to the left last year in the run-up to the primaries, after ranking as the 16th- and 10th-most-liberal during his first two years in the Senate.

Wake up flacks, Rove says you’re important

January 31, 2008

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Bush’s former brain, Karl Rove, states some new rules of presidential campaigns, including:

“The 21st century’s opening decade is seeing the rise of the communications director and press spokesman as the more important figures on a campaign staff.”

How quickly will press flacks forward this around to friends, loved ones and those who cut the pay checks?

As if they needed another ego boost … geez.

Still fuming…

From Roll Call’s Heard on the Hill and reported here first.

American Idle: The five-bus caravan set to transport Democrats to their retreat in Williamsburg, Va., on Wednesday had some people fuming. The buses sat waiting outside the Longworth House Office Building for more than an hour with their diesel engines running, sources tell HOH. GOP staffers gleefully noted to HOH that the gas-guzzling tour buses were surely kicking up plenty of fumes while waiting for members of the party that has made environmental friendliness its signature. In fact, as the bus engines were reportedly purring, the Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee was holding a hearing inside the Longworth Building on global warming.

Democrats ‘Bus’ted for breaking the law -UPDATE

January 30, 2008

DEMOCRATS BREAK THE LAW, SHOW SHAMELESS LACK OF CONCERN FOR ENVIRONMENT

UPDATE: Because the buses were on Federal Property, DC law does not pertain to them. The same cannot be said for the carbon footprint they left.

Below are some photos from this morning’s Democratic bus brigade waiting outside the Longworth House Office Building to take them to Williamsburg, VA for their retreat.

Staffers watching from nearby windows noticed the buses were idling as early as 7:15am, but didn’t depart until roughly 10:05am- leaving them idling for nearly 3 hours. In addition, three Penske trucks were also dispatched to carry the Members’ luggage (because apparently the cargo hold of the 5 buses was not enough space).

As stated by law:

In 1999, the DC Department of Health amended a municipal regulation (Title 20, §900.1) that applies to both gasoline and diesel engines. The DC idling law, which applies to buses with a seating capacity of twelve or more, restricts idling to three minutes.

Nancy, the law states three minutes, NOT three hours.

According to an EPA study conducted on idling buses in the DC metro area in Dec of 2006.

Long-duration vehicle idling waste a considerable amount of fuel (up to a gallon per hour) and exposes the driver, passengers, and the general public to harmful diesel air emissions, such as particulate matter and other air toxics.”

As one Capitol Police Officer reminded the Democratic staffers- they’re supposed to be law makers, not law breakers.

Folksy Nemesis Gohmert

January 29, 2008

O’Connor: Shays to Bush, “Lighten Up!”

Most other questions revolved largely around foreign policy, with Republicans asking about Bush’s recent trip to the Middle East — and Bush was able to neutralize his folksy nemesis, Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, a close ally who loves to tweak the president with his homespun wit and mock ignorance.

Bush teased the affable former judge during his remarks and repeatedly warned Gohmert away from asking any questions.

UPDATE: Congressman Louie Gohmert finally got his question in! Immediately following President Bush’s SOTU address (and with the cameras and mics on) Gohmert asked the president, “How do you give a rebate to people who didn’t put any bait in?”
